Self-Massage with Foam Roller

A foam roller will change your life.  It’s the poor man’s massage, but it works great.  These things have exploded onto the fitness and rehabilitation scene in the last 10 years or so – the way stability balls did twenty years ago.  You can use a foam roller to massage your legs, your butt, and parts of your back.  I use mine almost every day.  I even bought one for my brother.  In addition to using them to massage yourself, you can also use them as exercise equipment.

Buying a Foam Roller
When I first discovered these things from reading some lady’s article on illiotibial band problems, decided to order one.  Because I’m a cheap bastard, I ordered one from some foam supply company for $15.  No joke the thing was like packing foam that you would use to ship a box with – total waste of money.  I ordered a new one, this time I went all out and bought the most expensive one I could find, which was like $40, and I’m really glad I did because the thing is brilliant.  You can probably get one just as good for $25 though.  I have only tried one of these things, technically, so I’m not qualified to give advice with respect to what brand you should buy, but I will say that you should buy the 3-foot version.  The 1-foot version seems useless to me.
